The origin of hydrological responses following earthquakes in a confined aquifer: insight from water level, flow rate, and temperature observations

Abstract. Although many mechanisms of earthquake-induced hydrological response have been proposed in recent decades, the origins these responses remain enigmatic, and a quantitative understanding them is lacking. In this study, we quantitatively analyze mechanism coseismic water level flow rate from an artesian well southwestern China before after multiple earthquakes reveal origin based on monitoring data temperature. Water temperature always show step-like increases following earthquakes, which are independent earthquakes' epicentral distances magnitudes. Tidal analysis finds changes aquifer aquitard permeability corresponds to post-seismic total discharge 85–273 m3 20 d earthquakes. Furthermore, couple model mixing processes that occurred each earthquake. The results indicate result different volumes shallow deep aquifers, with ratio varying according
